Before leaving for a trip to town, Grandfather wants to take a “staged” family picture of Journey, Cat, Grandma, and himself. Since Grandma wasn’t planning on going to town with them he asked her to come out of the house to get in the picture anyway.
Read their exchange below and think about the subtle (not sure what “subtle” means – look it up!) meaning of the dialogue.
“Get a hat, Lottie,” he calls to her.
Grandma puts on her straw hat with the cloth strawberries and grumbles all the way down the path to the car.
“Look fetching, Lottie,” he tells Grandma as he leans down to peer through the camera.
“I’m not an actress, Marcus,” says Grandma sharply. “I am a hot, old woman.”
“You are a fetching hot, old woman,” says Grandfather, making Grandma laugh.

o Using the context, define the word “fetching.”
o Using a dictionary, define the word “fetching.” (Make sure you find a definition that makes sense in the context of Journey)
Interpret the actual intentions of both Grandfather and Grandma in the exchange. The excerpt states how Grandma grumbles and speaks sharply towards Grandfather. Is she really upset with him? Does her attitude change at all?
